Up to 31 athletes from 6 sports could be banned ahead of Rio 2016, after retests of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
This is after the IOC announced it was to retest 454 samples from the games, using more up to date scientific analysis methods.
More than 4,500 tests were carried out in Beijing but just nine athletes were caught cheating.
The IOC said retests focused on athletes who could take part in Rio this summer. Adding that the 12 affected national Olympic associations would be informed in the coming days.
There will also be re-tests on samples from the Winter Olympic games in Sochi 2014 after a whistle-blower alleged that Russian secret service agents protected drug cheats at the games, despite Russian authorities denying the claims.
WADA is now investigating the claims after the Russian state were found to have breached anti-doping rules, with a worldwide ban from all athletic competition enforced back in November.
