The former captain led Yorkshire to two successive County Championships, before Middlesex took last year's crown by beating the White Rose in their final game.

Gale has subsequently retired from playing in all formats of the game as he focuses on preparing the team for their quest to regain the trophy as well as bring continued success in the one-day and T20 formats.

He had previously led the side for the previous seven seasons which saw two T20 finals day appearances, 2 championship wins and promotion from the second division.

He finishes his tenure having just lost 12 Championship matches, with 40 victories to his name.

His replacement as captain has not been announced as of writing, but with the wealth of experience in the squad, there will be many worthy candidates.
