It will mean Ben Duckett will drop to bat at four, replacing the out of form Gary Ballance paving the way for Hameed to partner Alistair Cook at the top of the order.
He becomes the first teenager since Ben Hollioake in 1997 and before that Brian Close in 1949 to play for England, in a match that will see Cook captain England for the 54th time and overtake Michael Atherton as England's most capped Test captain.
Cook also confirmed that Stuart Broad will play his 100th test in Rajkot, leading the bowling attack in the absence of James Anderson. The right-arm seamer has taken 360 wickets in his first 99 test matches, with only Anderson and Sir Ian Botham having taken more for England in tests.
