New T20 tournament gets go-ahead

A new city-based T20 competition in England and Wales is set to begin in the summer of 2020.

Lords, the home of Middlesex, who voted against
the new competition.
Based around the Indian Premier League and Australia's Big Bash, the Tournament will involve 8 city-based teams and was approved by 38 of the 41 England and Wales cricket board members.

Only Middlesex and Essex voted against, with Kent abstaining from the vote.

The ECB needed 31 of its members to vote in favour of the tournament for it to be passed, which will be played alongside the current T20 Blast.

The competition will be played over a 38-day period, with 36 games played in total. Each team is guaranteed four home games.

All games are to be televised, with significant free-to-air exposure emphasis, ensuring there is no overlap in scheduling for the existing county competition, who each will be given £1.3m guaranteed.

The ECB has said the competition will give cricket the chance to be part of "mainstream conversation" and believes the tournament can make sport "relevant to a whole new audience".
