The Spanish pairing of Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez dominated their British opponents to wrap up the victory 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
It means that GB must win both of their singles rubbers on Sunday, with debutant Cameron Norrie -who won his first ever Davis Cup match on Friday, and Liam Brody the two lined up by team captain Leon Smith.
However, Kyle Edmund is available to be selected if he has recovered from a hip injury sustained in his career best semi-final appearance at the Australian Open, which caused his non-selection in the first round of singles ties.
