The ICC has submitted plans for womens T20 cricket to be included at the 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham.
In partnership with the ECB, the International Cricket Council will present their case to an assessment panel next month.
Only once before has cricket been a part of the commonwealth games, back in 1998 where South Africa won in Kuala Lumpur.
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: "We would like cricket to lead the way in the Commonwealth in inspiring more young girls to take up sport regardless of their background or culture,"
"If cricket were to be staged in these Games, we know every team competing would be guaranteed 'home' support," he continued. "There's a ready-made audience and ready-made infrastructure in the local vicinity."
